This cohousing development will be built within the Town of Bridgewater (population 8,600). This thriving town is located on the beautiful LaHave River on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, Canada, about an hour’s drive from the city of Halifax.
Bridgewater is a progressive town, and is much more than meets the eye. The Town of Bridgewater has developed a reputation for innovation in sustainability, gaining national exposure for its efforts. This work started with the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (2010), and its Municipal Climate Change Action Plan (2013). Its most recent initiative, Energize Bridgewater, seeks to accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy for Bridgewater.
Bridgewater’s Municipal Planning Strategy (2014) contains many progressive and sustainability-oriented policies including Smart Growth principles and mixed-use neighbourhoods, and supports well developed municipal services such as public transit. We are assured that a cohousing development will fit well within the Town’s vision and land-use by-laws.
The provincial newspaper (The Chronicle Herald) recognized Bridgewater as the Best Community in Atlantic Canada for Young Families. It is home to many amenities including excellent schools (including a French school, and a Waldorf school 15 minutes away), the South Shore Regional Hospital, shopping centres, many types of businesses, recreational facilities, programs and clubs for all ages and interests, and beautiful, well maintained parks. Spectacular white sand beaches and the world-class Kejimkujik National Park are less than an hour’s drive away. Neighbouring communities include the Town of Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as Mahone Bay, LaHave, Petite Riviere and New Germany.
We believe in the potential for Bridgewater to become a shining example of a sustainable, healthy community in rural Nova Scotia, and we want this housing project to be a part of it. We love this town and feel it is a great place to live, work, raise a family, and age with dignity. We welcome you to join us here!
