Our community is diverse, and there are many different food restrictions and preferences among our members. From early in our forming phase we asked our members to share their restrictions and preferences. While we know we can’t accommodate everyone at every Common Meal, our Meal Leads do consider people’s dietary restrictions when choosing what to make.
Recently, we’ve add different styles of eating our meal repertoire. On three nights in succession last weekend, we hosted three very different meals:
- A potluck focused on a slow, gentle, still atmosphere.
- A Messy Spaghetti meal, with teams and prizes.
- A Simple Souper Sunday meal with soup and bread–easy to prepare and quick to eat.
Pictures of the first meal weren’t that exciting, but the Messy Spaghetti meal certainly made up for that.

Prizes were for the tables with the:
- most creative name,
- most creative utensils,
- messiest faces,
- cleanest table, and
- zero food waste.
Lots of fun was had by both adults and children, and the impromptu judging and prizes were received. I’m sure we’ll do Messy Spaghetti dinners and similar meals again.
These meals worked very well, and as someone who attended all of them, I can report that they were each fun and worthwhile in their own way.
